News Corp. profit seen rising on TV, Web growth

CHICAGO (MarketWatch) -- Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. is expected to turn in a higher second-quarter profit Monday on a 5.2% revenue increase due to improved results at its cable- and broadcast-television networks, newspapers and Internet operations.

Analysts will listen carefully for the New York-based media giant's advertising forecast for the March quarter and beyond, as the industry looks for ways to cope with a weakening economy.

The latest wave of cyber attacks will likely be out of the box -- literally. Security researchers recently detected yet another crimeware toolkit that has the ability to turn established and legitimate Web sites into malware traps while constantly mutating to evade detection.

The new crimeware Trojan, which was first detected by San Jose-based security company Finjan, infected more than 10,000 Web sites in December alone and has likely affected hundreds of thousands of sites throughout 2007, experts say. Finjan researchers also assert that the number of affected sites will rise exponentially in the next 12 months, due to the fact that the toolkit enables attackers with very little experience to rapidly infect an enormous amount of machines in a short amount of time.

The Hubble Space Telescope Servicing Mission 4, scheduled for August 2008, aims to complete multiple upgrades and repairs, many of which are crucial for prolonging the telescope's operational life. One of the mission's many objectives is the refurbishment of its outer thermal blankets.

"Thermal blankets are to spacecraft as clothes are to people," says Mike Weiss, Hubble's technical deputy program manager. "Just as clothes cover our skin and help protect us from nature's elements...the cold winter wind and the scorching summer sun, thermal blankets protect Hubble from the harsh environment of space."
